Bruno Strauss, 1926-2018

Obituary

Dad died peacefully and quickly Monday morning, January 8, 2018, at the age of 91.

In 2016, he wrote his own summary of his life story, as an obituary.

Instead of a funeral, we had a celebration of his life in July, 2016. After that, we said heart-felt good-byes regularly. If you'd like to be with him for a few minutes, he's probably still listening to Starry, starry night, or a favorite opera.

He also wrote up a brief biography (30k words)

It has been almost two years since Dad died, and his Facebook page was somehow not set to "memorial" mode- sorry about the birthday announcements!

I don't miss him much more than I ever did. He prepared us well for his passing and I said my final good-byes to him many times over the last two decades.

I rarely saw him since I moved to California, in 1977. I visited him and Mom in Seattle and in Hawaii at times. They came to weddings and bar mitzvahs, and we talked regularly on the phone. But mostly he was present in my heart and my thoughts and often in dreams, and he still is.

I usually don't dwell on his memory. But writing this brings happy tears.

My father didn't intentionally live life as an example to others. He cared deeply about others, but didn't dwell too much on issues that he felt he had no control over. He worked hard to take care of his responsibilities, both to his family and to the many people at work, where the company's prosperity provided jobs and incomes as well as service to customers.

My father's life was a great example to me. He was open and honest and humble. He read widely and worked hard to understand many things. He valued what he knew but tried not to over-estimate its truth. While he got mad at times for some people's political decisions, and wasn't shy about calling them idiotic, he seemed to quickly let it go.

Nor did he say that we were better than them. In fact, he used to say something like, "Those people waging war in the Middle East are stupid. They're just as stupid as us."
